Chapter Twenty-One
The sun had barely made an appearance the next morning when I rolled over in time to see Creoleâs backside going through the door. I stuck my hand out from the under the sheet and waved. âGood excuse to get up early,â I grumbled to myself as I rolled out of bed and hit the shower.
I spent about a second giving thought to my appearance, then put on a jean skirt, tucked in a white button-down shirt, and slid into sandals that could be easily swapped out for tennis shoes if needed. The day needed a jump start of a double dose of caffeine, and I slid through the drive-thru on the short drive across the Cove to the office. I pulled in through the security gate, squinted over at Toadyâs side and, not seeing any activity, parked on Fabâs side and hiked up the stairs.
As I unlocked the door, I realized it was the first time Iâd been in the office alone. I curved around the corner and into my space and set my tote down, then opened the sliding door and took a seat at my desk. If I could make one change, it would be to add rippling water sounds coming up from below, but not much chance of that since it was used for boat parking. I pulled my laptop out and started the process of updating files.
The door opened and slammed shut. I didnât have to wonder who was making all the noise for very long.
âWhy is it that Iâm always chasing you around town?â Fab bellowed.
âCan you bring me a water?â I yelled, and laughed to myself. Itâs always a good day when you can annoy your best friend.
Fab slammed around, and I listened as her footsteps went from her desk to the kitchen and stomped into my office. She set two waters down and slipped into a chair.
âGood news,â I said. âSpoon assured me that the Hummer would be as good as new and ready for pickup tomorrow. Iâll be happy to ditch the beater truck until the next emergency.â
âYou couldnât call that you were coming in early?â She sniffed and stared around my small space as though Iâd moved something.
âNext time, okay? We both know there will be one.â I smiled cheekily.
âAlmost forgot. Gunz called. Heâs got a job, and heâll be here in a few with the details.â
I didnât believe for a second that she hadnât asked for the particulars. If I had to venture a guess, the odds on favorite was that it had to do with another relative of his. âHereâs a suggestion: why donât you have Gunz get to the point in an email or over the phone, like the rest of your clients? Unless you like these in-person sit downs and enjoy that he drools all over you.â
Fab scrunched up her nose. âEww.â
The door slammed open again. âFabiana, my dear,â Gunz hollered, his heavy footsteps barreling down the hallway.
I made a barfing noise. âLetâs take this party out to your desk.
